More proof Ohio really is the birthplace of aviation: Forty-eight years ago today, Newark, Ohio, native Jerrie Mock ended her solo flight around the world.
She was the first woman ever to complete the journey.
Now some central Ohioans are wondering why her home state doesn’t have so much as a plaque commemorating the achievement. One group in Licking County has even raised almost half of the $45,000 needed to make a statue of Mock.

Ohio’s awesome.
